Construction materials used in use installations –copper vs. polypropylene- what do we choose?

Interior design should consider two important aspects: functionality and durability. Irrespective of the material chosen, interior installations (natural gas, heating, plumbing) should be made carefully, and take into account that each type of material has certain features and differences related to cost, quality, confort and payback. The most used materials in heating and plumbing are copper and polyproylene. In the following we present the advantages of both types of materials. To make the best decision in purchasing the right materials in order to fullfil your needs, our specialists can and will assist you in choosing the material for your specific needs.

Copper: Copper pipes are widely used in installation works like installation of water supply, central heating, air conditioning. Copper pipe is quality certified for use on any segment of plumbing and heating.

Advantages:

  • withstands high temperatures;
  • withstands temperature and pressure differences of installations;
  • antibacterian properties- prevents formation of deposits of organic materials;
  • it does not change it’s properties;
  • aesthetic: looks better than any other type of installation- in apparent pipe’s case-also copper pipes can be painted in different colors to match any design interior of the room; withstans higher pressures, which cause smaller diameters, so copper pipes looks pleasant;
  • copper has an unlimited lifespan;
  • copper is easy and quick to install; requires a minimum number of tools for it’s installation;
  • a significant advantage is the absence of mechanical tension in the pipe structure;
  • ecologic advantage- pipes can be reciclate: in the construction industry is given its importance in using of environmentally and friendly materials, and the copper materials are reusable without changing their properties;
  • fittings do not reduce pipe’s diameter, this is why there are not quantity loss;

Disadvantages:

  • the higher price of copper pipes compared to pipes made of other materials- with 35-40% more expensive as the PPR;
  • installation made of copper pipes is not as well soundproofed as the PPR;
  • aluminum radiators are not recommended in copper installations.

Polypropylene is part of thermoplastic materials, PPR pipes are incresingly being used in plumbing and heating installations; they are recommended for heating installations buried in the floor or wall. They can be simple (without insertion), with composite fiber insertion or aluminium insertion- are guaranteed 100 years.

Advantages:

  • it is sealed perfectly;
  • it does not rust;
  • it doesn’t change it’s technical characteristic over time; they don’t corrodate;
  • it has a high resistance to high temperatures;
  • higher chemical corrosion resistance than any other material;
  • medium impact resistance;
  • ecological;
  • lightweighted, easily transported and easy handling;
  • lower price;
  • increased yield, heat is not wasted, the transfer coefficient is very low;
  • fittings do not reduce pipe’s diameter and therefore there are not quantity loss;
  • the PPR installations are very well soundproofed.

Disadvantages:

  • used in heating installations it can determine unstable joints over time;
  • aestethic disadvantage: massive appearance, particularly in the areas of joints, fittings are bigger and bulkier than the barrel itself;
  • for painted pipes, paint does not resist over time;
  • high coefficient of expansion at warmth, and at cold becomes brittle- for underfloor heating installation you must take in consider this aspect.

In adition to the features listed above, you should be aware of the importance of pipelines combining technology and the experience of the staff which can execute installation works. With an experience of over ten year, Miral Instal provides consultancy, design and execution of natural gas, heating and plumbing services. The company has qualified and trained employees, and also invest in the latest technology to complete it’s works at very high standards.

Specialist’s advice: Even if we talk about the PPR installation or the copper one,in order to choose the right material for the installation work, you must take into account the payback period. We advise you to choose the best materials for you use installations and also to choose a more economical solution if you live in a rented house or apartment. If it’s not your own house yu should not consider to invest more money in yur use and heating installations.
